Reina Ritual

Angélica’s 20-city North America tour scheduled to support her debut album was set to begin in mid-March 2020, but was twice postponed before ultimately being cancelled due to the lingering impact of COVID-19. It was during this time that Angélica, self-taught and self-trained, pivoted to visual art and painting. In Spring 2021, nearly a year after the release of REINA, Angélica debuted “Reina Ritual,” her experiential, in-home art showcase.

With “Reina Ritual,” Rahe traded the sonic landscape for a visual one to reveal the queens in the people and places around her. “Reina Ritual” presented as a collection of oil paintings on canvas including six portraits of strong Austin-based women and seven still life pieces captured in her own home in Old West Austin. In the series, she examines the connection between femininity and familiarity with a through line that links the composure of women and the comforts of home. It's a connection that helped Rahe reside firmly in her own queendom during the pandemic that forced her to re-assess and re-imagine herself not only as a musician but as an artist.
